Woman died in storms
A 75-year-old woman has died after a tree fell onto a car during storms near Salisbury on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to a single vehicle collision on the A30 at Compton Chamberlayne shortly after 9.30am.
A police spokesman believes a large tree fell into the road and on to the car – a Ford Fiesta – which was travelling northbound from Fovant.
The 75-year-old passenger, from Dorset, died at the scene.
Her family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
The driver, a 74-year-old woman, also from Dorset, suffered serious injuries to her leg which are believed to be life-changing.
She was taken to Southampton Hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.
The road was reopened at approximately 11.45pm after crews removed the tree and repaired the power infrastructure.
Weather warnings for wind were in place for much of Thursday as Storm Diana caused widespread disruption.
