How investment and high-profile events aim to help Salisbury

THE Maltings in the city centre will be revamped under multi-million pound proposals which will see a new hotel, library, gym and restaurant in the city centre.

The applicatio­n by developer TH Real Estate will transform the block on Fisherton Street and Malthouse Lane.

More than £6m has been put forward for the scheme from the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnershi­p.

Baroness Scott of Bybrook, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to bring forward proposals on this initial phase of the Maltings regenerati­on so soon after the terrible events that took place in Salisbury in March last year. This proposal will deliver important change in this location and will help bring more visitors to our beautiful city.”

Wiltshire Council has submitted a bid for investment under the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

Money claimed would support the improvemen­t of Salisbury’s city cen- tre for residents, businesses and visitors. A central Government pot of £675m is available.

Pauline Church, cabinet member for economic developmen­t and South Wiltshire Recovery, said: “Salisbury city centre has been affected by the same issues faced by high streets throughout the country, particular­ly the rise of online shopping.

“Salisbury is focused on the future and moving forward, but trade in the city has also been badly affected in the past year, which is why we are confident that we will have a strong case.”

The Armed Forces Day National Event will take place in Salisbury on June 28, 29 and 30. An anticipate­d 250,000 people are expected over the three days to join the celebratio­ns and recognise the armed forces and the vital role they play in protecting us and our country, as well as honouring our veterans.
