Outdated, antiquated system of governance

-

THANKS (inadvertently) to Theresa May for bringing her government to the very nadir of democracy, cohesion and the laughing stock throughout the rest of the EU and western world.

Is it not patently obvious she has brought down what is, and has been for far too long, an outdated, antiquated system of governance and which – as demonstrated – is no longer fit for purpose.

The adversarial structure of both the House of Commons and House of Lords only reflects the input stemming from the monarchial influence, notwithstanding the widely held propaganda that ‘The Firm’ does not do politics, which also indicates that the sooner we dispense with all things royal, the better and fairer our democracy will be.

So, a solution in a nutshell!

It is the prevailing, existing political party system that is the very nub of all the problems that persist throughout the parliamentary configuration; examples of this are numerous and include the democratic, unelected majority of those in the House of Lords – greater now in numbers than those in the House of Commons!

Also, the fact that the elected MPs are supposedly those charged with ‘running the country’ and are not required to have any qualifications whatsoever goes some way to explaining why there is such an inability to reach speedy outcomes and solutions. The current EU situation is a prime example of this – making mountains out of molehills.

There is, however, throughout the UK, those individuals who seek to represent for and on behalf of others in their constituencies without the constrictions of political parties. These people have business experience and are willing to take on the job as standing to be elected as a representative in a government consisting of like-minded people. We must have a purpose-built modern ‘home’, with representatives working full time, four days a week and one full day in their constituency office. They should also have the same holiday allowance as all other workers.

As intimated, only a very brief outline of what could be a better democratic system for a modern day means of governance, as opposed to the current complete and utter shambles that will doubtless affect the vast majority in due course. Peter J Mahoney,
