A fabulous fortnight for food lovers
CIDER farm and brewery tours and tastings, countryside foraging walks, open farm days and an opportunity to make your own scotch egg are just some of the treats in store during West Country Food Adventures, which starts today.
The team behind the multi awardwinning eat:Festivals, winner of the 2019 Western Daily Press Food & Farming Awards’ “local food champion” accolade, have curated a range of experiences, tours and pop-ups across Somerset and beyond throughout the coming fortnight.
West Country Food Adventures builds on the Mendip-focused Taste the Landscape trail, delivered by Wells Sustainable Network. Its aim is to encourage people to meet the makers of food and drink at their premises and explore the countryside.
“West Country Food Adventures is an invitation to get to the root of what the land is for,” says co-organiser Bev Milner Simonds.
“You can ask questions, taste test, have a go or just have a picnic and go and explore a farm. We’ve tried to make it easy to get to by bus, bike, horse or on foot. Most of the events are free and many can be self-led. If
you’ve been looking for an excuse to delve into the levels or moors, coast or hills of this beautiful part of the world, these West Country Food Adventures are a great place to start.”
The dozens of West Country Adventures available between July 13 and 28 include:
Back to Nature foraging walk at the Clavelshay Barn, near Bridgwater;
Make your own scotch eggs at “egg central” aka Nutts Scotch Eggs in Bleadon;
Brews, Blues and Barbeques at Pitchfork Brewery in Hewish;
Farm tours at West Ilkton on Exmoor and Wookey Farm near Wells;
Tastings and tours at cider makers including Harrys Cider in Long Sutton, Dorset Nectar near Bridport and Barley Wood in Wrington;
A tour and tasting at Feltham’s Farm, the home of Renegrade Monk cheese near Templecombe.
