THE GAMES IN NUMBERS
– sports on the schedule for the Tokyo Olympics, with 22 in the Paralympics that follow
– sports chosen by the Tokyo organising committee in addition to the ‘core’ Olympic sports. Karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding appear for the first time, with baseball/softball returning to the Games
– medal events in the Olympic programme, with athletics (48) and swimming (37) accounting for the largest shares

– weight in tons of used small electronic devices, such as mobile phones, collected by municipal authorities across Japan to provide recycled metals for the approximately 5,000 medals to be presented. Mobile phone operator NTT Docomo collected an additional six million-plus handsets in its stores nationwide
– the Tokyo Games mark the 32nd Olympiad.
