Rovers are not scared of anyone, says Upson

ED Upson believes that Bristol Rovers’ tight-knit squad has contributed to the club’s good start this season.

Rovers sit eighth in the League One table and are so far unbeaten during September.

Upson is one of a number of players who have impressed in this campaign and he feels that Rovers are benefiting from having a tight bond in the squad.

“I just think general togetherness,” he explained. “There’s a few new lads who’ve come in over the summer and there’s a different style of play from when the gaffer took over.

“It feels like it’s all gelling and the boys are in a good place at the moment.”

He added: “Mentally the boys are flying. I think there were a couple of results before that where we felt we should have got something out of the game, but overall we’re pleased.

“There’s still work to be done and improvements to be made, but you can’t ask for too much more.”

Rovers have had a hectic schedule to begin the season, which has seen some players pick up some niggling injuries.

It is not ideal for a smaller squad such as the Pirates’, but Upson believes that their squad size can actually work in their favour.

He said: “Sometimes the smaller squads have a better togetherness and that can work in your favour, rather than just having a team of individuals.

“Obviously the team is more important and goes a lot further than individuals can.”

Rovers host Rotherham United today in a game that Upson freely admits will be difficult.

However, the 29-year-old believes Rovers have the right mentality to cope with the different stresses of a League campaign.

He said: “We’ve got a few tough games coming up and there will be losses along the way, but it’s about keeping your confidence and keeping your belief.

“You’ll have ups and you’ll have downs, so you’ve got to try and stay as level as you can. Don’t let yourself get too down in the tough times because there will be some, but just enjoy the good times.”

So, can Rovers continue their promising start and turn it into a successful campaign? Looking across League One, Upson sees no reason why not.

He said: “In previous seasons you’ve had some real big-hitters who you thought will be up there no matter what. This season I think it’s a level playing field, although there’s still a couple of the big boys left. The way we’re playing and our mentality, I don’t think we’re scared of anyone.”
