Lifeguards should have been ready

- Maggie Loates Paignton, Devon

WITH reference to Mark Cowrie’s statement that the RNLI needed time to prepare for lifeguards to return safely to the beach because they had received news of the lifting of the lockdown at the same time as the public, it rather begs the question of what they have been doing for the last 12 weeks.

Mr Cowrie must have known that the beaches would be reopened at some point. I believe the RNLI was already hiring lifeguards in preparation for an Easter opening so these people could have already been equipped and trained by the time the lockdown was lifted.

Why had Mr Cowrie not already planned for this and put in place the necessary equipment and training so that the lifeguards would be ready to go the moment the beaches were reopened?

I don’t know how much Mr

Cowrie gets paid but I would suggest it is far too much considering his incompetent response to the pandemic.

Had he acted promptly, I have no doubt several lives could have been saved.
