Tigers do deal for top target

-

GLOUCESTER City have signed their “number one attacking target” with striker Akwasi Asante joining the club from Chester.

Dutch-born Asante scored 21 goals in 29 games for Chester, including a penalty in City’s defeat at the Deva Stadium at the start of the season.

He was third in the National League North top scorers’ table, averaging a League goal every 94 minutes, the best in the division.

Asante, 27, started his career with City boss James Rowe at Birmingham, and had loan spells at Northampton and Shrewsbury before leaving the Blues to sign for Kidderminster Harriers.

Spells at Solihull, Grimsby and Tamworth followed before his switch to Chester.

He said: “I’m delighted to have signed, it didn’t take very long to make my mind up with James Rowe being the manager here.

“I’ve known him for ten years, he coached me as a 17-year-old.

“James has always stayed in touch with me over the years and kept an eye on my career.”

Experienced defender Jamie Price has re-signed as a player for Taunton, who have revealed he will also be joining the Southern League club’s management team.

Taunton boss Rob Dray said: “It’s great to have Jamie for another season, and he has also made a slight step into management.

“He will assist with anything player-related. He can only do this because of the respect the players have for him.”

Earlier this week, Taunton signed four new players – Toby Holmes, Gethyn Hill, Lee Lucas and Aaron Bentley.
