Ban for motorist slurring her speech with child in car

-

A MOTORIST has been banned after police stopped her driving with a child in her car and found she was slurring her speech and had dilated pupils.

Chelsey Rose, from Rosebery Road in St Werburgh’s, Bristol, was pulled over driving a black Audi A3 in Westfield Way in Swindon, on Friday, June 3, the town’s magistrates were told.

Police said they were on patrol in the early hours when they pulled over the car and became concerned about the driver.

Rose, 26, had two men and a tenyear-old boy in the car. Police gave her a roadside drug swipe because they were concerned “about her slurred speech and dilated pupils”.

The woman’s test was positive for cannabis but when she was taken to the police station, Rose declined to allow a blood test.

She was charged and appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where she pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Magistrates banned her from driving for 12 months, fined her £150 with another £85 in court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Pc Luke Hobbs, from Wiltshire Police’s roads policing unit, said the presence of the child in the car at such a late hour was concerning.

“Everybody knows the dangers of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, and the risk that these sorts of offenders pose to both themselves and other road users,” he said. “What makes this even worse is that there was a child in the car at the time.

“Our job is to keep the roads safe, and when we find people who are deliberately putting others in danger then we will ensure you are put before the courts to face justice.”
