Human remains discovered in garden date back to Bronze Age

-

HUMAN remains found at a property in Somerset during renovation work are believed to date back to the Bronze Age.

The remains, believed to be an intact skeleton, were found at the property in Wrington High Street last Friday by people renovating the building.

Police were called and the bones confirmed as human by the county archaeologist. It is believed that early assessments carried out on the remains have revealed they could date back to the Bronze Age.

The remains are understood to have been found about two to three feet down in the garden of the property.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “North Somerset Council’s senior archaeologist is working with Avon and Somerset Police and the owners of the property to ensure any further skeletal remains or archaeological finds are properly excavated and recorded.

“These human remains were an unexpected discovery but such discoveries are not uncommon. The archaeological investigation that is due to commence shortly will hopefully provide a date for the remains and help us learn more about the individual who was laid to rest here.

“It is also hoped this discovery will add to our understanding of the village’s history.”

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Police were called to a property in High Street, Wrington, on Friday 5 August, after possible human bones were found during renovation work taking place within the grounds.

“A forensic archaeologist has identified the remains as human but they appear non-recent. Police continue to liaise with the county archaeologist.”
