Speed limits should apply to cyclists

-

IT’S great to read that there is a proposed 20mph limit for people on bicycles.

I hope this can be properly enforced, just as the existing 20mph limit for motor vehicles should be enforced. Motor vehicles kill and maim loads more people on our roads every year.

We need to take action against bully-boy, dangerous drivers who give the vast majority of people who drive a bad name, just as the tiny minority of bad people who cycle give everyone else who cycles a bad name.

Bristol’s city-wide 20mph limits have been a big success and are hugely popular. They save four to five lives every year, prevent 11 serious and 159 minor injuries each year, and save the NHS and police £15m a year.

That’s a huge success! Far fewer ambulance visits, far fewer trauma injuries, much less trauma surgery now needed. This all helps our hardpressed NHS. This is public health in action, and Bristol is leading nationally on this. We are showing the way ahead.

There are children and old folks alive and walking around Bristol today who would not be alive without the city-wide 20mph limits.

So yes, let’s have more enforcement and the proper resources to help our police enforce the life-saving limits. The limits are there to save lives and protect the public, remember.
