WHAT THEY SAY
The first time I met her was in 1977 when I was just a little boy. When I would meet with her as Prime Minister almost four decades later in 2015, I joked that the last time that we had met she had been taller than me - she responded with a quip about my making her feel old. Her sense of humour was one of her many great qualities and one of the many reasons why she was one of my favourite people in the world - Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paying tribute to the late Queen during a special session of his country’s House of Commons.
In one sense, the people here stand for all those in the country who would like to be here and can’t be. I think it shows a sense of deep affection for the stability that the Queen represented and gave us - the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, on the tens of thousands queuing to pay their respects to the late monarch at Westminster Hall.
The title remains an insult to Wales and is a symbol of historical oppression. The title implies that Wales is still a principality, undermining Wales’ status as a nation and a country. In addition, the title has absolutely no constitutional role for Wales, which is now a devolved country with a national Parliament - from an online petition calling for the end of the Prince of Wales title “out of respect” for the Welsh, which has gathered more than 25,000 signatures.
To my tennis family and beyond. Of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years, the greatest, without a doubt, has been the people I’ve met along the way: my friends, my competitors, and most of all the fans who give the sport its life - Tennis star Roger Federer announcing his retirement.
