People are returning to the days of “make-do and mend”, with the number of people shopping in haberdashers up 30% year on year, a poll found.
The study also noted a 40% rise in demand for second-hand clothes, while spending on new togs fell 2% and sales of kids’ clothing fell 14%.
The poll by the Revolut money app showed spending in department stores was down by 12%, and furniture shop sales fell by 7%.
There was a 28% increase in shoppers at discount stores, while supermarket spending overall fell 3%.
A Revolut statement said: “We saw consumers tighten their belts.”
