Own-brand soup bowls over testers

-

A supermarket own-brand soup beat Heinz’s offering in a blind test.

The 55p Sainsbury’s cream of tomato, pictured right, came first with 81 out of 100, way ahead of the food giant’s £1.40 version on 69.

Tasters praised its “wellbalanced tomato flavour” and “appetising colour”.

Baxters, the most expensive soup, at £1.60, was last, with a score of 57, in the test by consumer group Which?.

Soups by Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer all beat Heinz and Baxters.

Tesco’s 55p tin came second with 80 – tasters said “the strength of the tomato flavour was just right” and Asda’s 50p one was third with 75.

Aldi’s Bramwells cream of tomato, the cheapest entry at 45p, scored 68.

Which?’s Reena Sewraz said: “Own brands more than stand their ground.”
