Waverley set for £500k maintenance makeover

-

MORE than half a million pounds is to be spent on the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer in preparation for her 2023 season.

Winter maintenance is under way on the famous Waverley paddle steamer – a frequent visitor to the Bristol Channel – after a busy season.

The main deck around the engine and boiler rooms has been stripped, sanded and revarnished.

The newly varnished deck will now be covered to protect it during the heavy winter overhaul works, which will start next week.

A Waverley spokesperson said: “We are anticipating over £500,000 will be spent directly on Waverley this winter on maintenance works.

“The deck is looking fantastic now it has four coats of varnished applied.

“More volunteers are welcome to come forward to help with the task of stripping, sanding and varnishing the bench seats.

“There will be a need for us to raise funds to meet the cost of dry dock and we would welcome donations to help fund the winter refit work via
