Western Daily Press (Saturday)

Thank you, Professor Webb, for your letters

-

I AM so pleased Professor Webb reads this newspaper.

Letters regularly arrive from individuals stating some reason why climate change is not a man-made phenomenon and we should all calm down. Could it be true? What is said seems plausible, particularly if there is a scientific sheen to their prose, but surely not, all the world’s leading climate scientists, research institutes and government bodies can’t be wrong – can they?

Then a letter from Professor

Webb, and others in fairness, arrives carefully explaining, referencing his points to peer reviewed scientific papers, etc, why the “facts” put forward are wrong and sadly climate change is real and we need to do something about it.

I’m sure as a man of science and reason, Professor Webb must get frustrated that people continue to put forward comprehensively debunked theories but I have come to realise that it is part of the human psyche. If people are ambivalent or little interested in a certain topic they are open to persuasion but, if they hold strong opinions, they will end up arguing black is white rather than concede a point.

Please keep up the good work, professor.
