PM’s made biggest error of premiership

-

RISHI Sunak says his daughters are the experts on climate change in his house.

Really?! As they are no more than 12 years old, this is rather worrying because their education won’t have laid out the gory details of what unabated climate change will mean to millions who will be increasingly subject to unliveable heat waves, fires and floods.

Our PM needs to get an updated version of the briefing that the government chief scientist and climate experts gave to Boris Johnson.

Johnson concluded that it was vital to show ambition both in setting targets on vehicle emissions and in providing Alok Sharma as the chair for the COP meeting in Glasgow.

Sharma is highly critical of

Sunak’s latest, politically-motivated, announcement that, once again, sidesteps humankind’s greatest challenge.

The UK, an anchor of net zero hope, has been set adrift. We have shown the benefits of our ambition, with world class offshore wind, but have now lost direction.

It is not just this latest delay to phasing out combustion engine vehicles, but also the granting of licences for new coal and then new North Sea oil and gas.

Then we had the failure to prepare the latest offshore wind auction that resulted in no bids. These actions totally undermine the UN’s vital attempts to turn the tide on fossil fuels. If a G7 nation showing success weakens its resolve, others will also reduce their ambition.

Mr Sunak says he will have no problem explaining his decision to his daughters. I am sure they trust their daddy, but they will see the consequences as they grow older and, with the wisdom of adulthood, will recognise what others are saying – this is the biggest mistake of his premiership.
