Young rural champions on awards shortlist
INSPIRATIONAL young people from the South West have been shortlisted for a range of top accolades at the YFC Achiever Awards 2023.
The awards, given by the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs’ (NFYFC), recognise and reward the dedication and commitment shown by those who are supporting the British countryside.
A total of eight categories shine a light on the work that YFC members and their supporters do throughout the year – from acts of kindness in local communities to developing rural enterprises. High profile names from across the industry helped with the judging process and the winners will be announced at a special ceremony in Birmingham on Friday, November 3.
Nigel Owens, retired international rugby referee and president of the NFYFC, said all the finalists demonstrated the important role young people play in their rural communities.
“Our judges had a tough challenge to shortlist our 40 finalists, and each one of them makes me proud to be
NFYFC’s president. These awards celebrate the work young people do to keep their rural communities connected, supported and thriving,” he added.
“All the finalists have dedicated their time and skills to support others and we are looking forward to applauding their achievements at our awards ceremony in November. A huge congratulations to all the finalists and good luck.”
Mr Owens helped to choose the shortlist for the Heart of YFC Award, sponsored by Kärcher UK, and the winner of this category is decided by the YFC community.
The five shortlisted YFC members are part of a public vote, which will close tomorrow, October 1, ahead of the actual announcement at the awards.
Among those vying for votes is Tom Retallick, county chairman of Cornwall YFC and a member of St Columb YFC.
Judges commented that Tom is “passionate about YFC and has made it his mission to ensure more young people are aware of the opportunities”.
A further six finalists will be representing the South West – Aspiring Rural Leader: Dan Dennis (Devon) and Katie Grist (Devon); Community Spirit Award: Bradworthy YFC (Devon); Entrepreneur of the Year: Jack Tucker (Devon); New Member of the Year: Toby (Cornwall); YFC Supporter of the Year: Andrew Body (Cornwall).
