Dasilva’s got what it takes to be Blues’ next Cole

- DAVID BYROM Football writer

TOMAS Kalas says Chelsea and Bristol City team-mate Jay Dasilva could become the next Ashley Cole.

The duo are both on loan at the Robins from the Blues and both have impressed in defence.

Dasilva started the season as an understudy to Lloyd Kelly, but has now found himself a spot in the Robins’ starting XI at left-back. Kalas told West London Sport that his young team-mate has the ability to emulate one of the Blues’ all-time greats.

“In the last three games, he’s impressed everyone,” said Kalas. “He’s looking at his best and I’m really pleased for him. He has a calmness about his play and he’s always had that. In pre-season we were training together so I can see what his strengths are, and he’s a very front-foot player.

“He’s always thinking about what he’s doing and knows what he is doing. Even when he’s under pressure, he keeps calm. That’s his big strength.

“He’s a very confident player. He obviously knows that he’s a good player. He could become another Ashley Cole. There’s still a long way to go, but why not?”

Dasilva thanked his team-mate for the high praise and says Cole is one of his idols. He said: “It’s huge to have people say something like that. Ashley Cole’s one of my role models as a left-back. Obviously he was a great player for both club and country, so of course he was a big role model for me – he was mainly the player I looked up to.”

While the England Under-21 international is focusing on his time at the Robins, he says he would like to captain the Blues some day.

“It’s definitely something I would like to achieve some day,” he added.

“Taking on that kind of responsibility is a big thing, but I would certainly like to take it on.

“For now, I’m really enjoying it. I’ve had a few months to settle in and the boys are all cool. I’m feeling good now and enjoying my time here.”

Preston will be without firstchoice goalkeeper Chris Maxwell for this weekend’s encounter with City.

The Wales Under-21s international has to serve a one-game ban after being sent off for two bookable offences against Ipswich.

Maxwell, who has recently regained the starting spot from Declan Rudd, received his marching orders after bringing down Ipswich forward Kayden Jackson.

As Preston had already used all three of their substitutions, outfield player Paul Gallagher was forced to don the gloves for the final 15 minutes. It is thought Rudd will come into the starting line-up for Saturday’s clash with City.
