Motorway services group mulls M5 hotel development
IT is already considered a shopping destination, now it could be a place for motorists to rest their weary heads.
The family behind Gloucester Services are putting together plans to build a 100-bedroom hotel on the southbound side of the M5.
The Westmorland family, who own the service station in conjunction with the Gloucester Gateway Trust, say they want to meet “the addition- al needs of the motorway user” by providing overnight accommodation.
By providing a hotel it could also lead to jobs for people in the Matson area of the city.
It is hoped a planning application would be submitted by the end of this year but they are consulting with residents in the area to hear their views.
A spokesman from the Westmor- land family said: “Gloucestershire Gateway Trust and Westmorland are proposing to build a hotel on the southbound site of Gloucester Services.
“A full planning application will be submitted in winter 2018, but prior to this, we are seeking public consultation to help shape our proposals and ensure the build of the hotel is sympathetic to the community.”
A website dedicated to the plans said: “The design proposals have been carefully considered to enhance and complement the existing development and the surrounding area.
“The proposals reflect the design of the existing services and would create a high-quality development that is sensitive to its context.”
Four years after the service station opened, the new hotel could be the “next phase for Gloucester Services”.
