Harry’s delighted his seven-game run without a goal is over

-

» AFTER coming to the rescue of England with his late winning goal, man-of-the-match Harry Kane admitted he was relieved to have ended his seven-match international goal drought.

“It felt good. It has been one of those spells for me personally, but that is what it is about. We stuck at it, stayed calm. We deserved to win,” he told Sky Sports. “We were disappointed we didn’t take our chances, but we were creating chances. We said after the World Cup we wanted to keep progressing and the only way to do that is win games against big opposition.”

Substitute Jesse Lingard, whose introduction proved influential, said their run to the World Cup semi-final in July helped in their come-from-behind victory.

“We kept the confidence, we kept the spirit and togetherness we took from the World Cup and winning 2-1 is a fabulous feeling,” he said.

England boss Gareth Southgate, pictured above, was happy with the way his side handled going behind against the run of play and felt it showed the progress they were making.

He said: “We didn’t discuss the relegation at all. We just saw this as an opportunity, it was effectively a quarter-final.”

He added. “We haven’t just sat back after the summer and preened ourselves, the players have progressed. I think people can see the style, people are starting to believe in what we are doing, but the biggest thing for me is the connection with the fans. I’ve not seen new Wembley like that since I’ve been in charge.”
