Wobbly winner of art prize

Western Daily Press - - News -

THIS year’s winner of the spoof art award the Turnip Prize has been announced - as a toy dog on some jelly named ‘Collywobbles’.

The contest is a quirky West Country take satirising the Tate Gallery’s Turner Prize by rewarding deliberately bad modern art.

Nominees this year included a piece named ‘Hollywood’, which consists of a piece of holly on a piece of wood, and ‘Hot Date’, which is a chilli and a date.

But the winner was artist ‘Stoke We’ for his collie dog on top of a jelly.

The award was made in front of a packed audience at a Somerset pub, which cheered when the 69-year-old winner accepted the prize.

The winner – who says he is a lavatory cleaner – won a turnip mounted on a six-inch nail at the New Inn in Wedmore.

Organiser Trevor Prideaux said: “I am delighted with the lack of effort taken to create this work.”
