A GIFT FROM THE WEST FOR CHELSEA PENSIONERS
THERE’S nothing better than a good piece of West Country cheese over Christmas and the Chelsea Pensioners certainly won’t be missing out this year.
A huge consignment arrived yesterday for the annual Ceremony of the Christmas Cheeses.
More than a quarter of a tonne was donated by a number of top cheesemakers.
The ceremonial cheese was a giant 24kg wheel of Montgomery Cheddar, from North Cadbury in Somerset, and nearby cheesemaker Barbers also donated 8.5kg of its 1833 and mature cheddar range.
With 2018 marking the centenary of the Armistice, tribute was paid to the brave men and women who have given their lives in conflict.
Dairy UK chairman, Paul Vernon, also highlighted the role cheddar rations played in providing important nutrients to soldiers.
