We do not have the space for this influx

- Stuart Eels, Wiltshire

I FIND the letter from Paul Halas attacking Chris Moncrieff ’s political column to be exactly guilty of the very same thing he accuses Chris Moncrieff of, lazy.

When the illegal migrants’ boats first landed in Italy and Greece, the numbers were small, they were testing the reaction and when Europe didn’t send them back to Africa, the small numbers turned into 100,000s of thousands.

Those illegal migrants settled all over Europe with Angela Merkel welcoming them saying we can take more. When she found her country turning against her because a million entered Germany in less than a year, she determined that all EU countries must take a proportion of them, when Poland and Hungary refused, they were stripped of their voting rights by the EU.

If we don’t stop this very small illegal smuggling across the Channel into England, we will find ourselves in the same situation as Italy and Greece, that’s why I believe Chris Moncrieff is entirely correct. This country of England and I am only talking of England because that’s where most migrants, legal or illegal, settle has become since Tony Blair’s throwing open of our borders the most densely populated country in Europe (UN). The population of England has grown from 49,925,500 in 2003 to 55,619,400 in 2018 (UK Government) with England making up 84 per cent (UK Government) of the UK population.

Paul Halas claims this to be a modest rising population, it’s nothing of the sort, it’s a jump of 5,693,900 in 16 years. Has Mr Halas seen 16 cities the size of Sunderland built to cope with this massive influx? No, of course he hasn’t and nor has anyone else, that’s why our infrastructure can’t cope, why our NHS can’t cope, why we don’t have enough police and emergency services to cope, why we don’t have enough housing, why our education system can’t cope.

To blame our country for this rise because in Mr Halas’ words “most seeking refuge” are as a result of conflicts the UK has been complicit in creating is entirely wrong and a lazy way to explain away for this situation. Why Mr Halas, if these people are asylum seekers, have

they travelled through European countries that are safe havens and paid thousands to be smuggled into this country?

The fault that this has been allowed to happen is down to lazy politicians from both Labour and Tory with equal prompting from the Liberal Democrats whilst in alliance with the Tories. If they were going to allow so many in they should indeed have been building a city the size of Sunderland every year from 2003.
