One rule for us and another for them

- Robert Readman Bournemouth, Dorset Mike Jackman Looe Kerry Bartell (Mrs) Goonhavern, Cornwall A Ballatti via email

UNTIL the weekend just gone I have taken some comfort in the fact that, thankfully, we do not have a leader as dishonest and untrustworthy as President Trump.

Alas no longer. Boris Johnson’s attempts to justify and excuse the deliberate flouting of lockdown rules by his chief advisor, Dominic Cummings – with the backing of many of his cabinet toadies – has completely destroyed any faith I (and millions of others) had in his ability to govern with honesty and integrity.

I have always voted Conservative but, if there were an election tomorrow, I would most certainly cast my vote elsewhere.

Boris had his chance and he’s blown it spectacularly. Bluster won’t get him out of this one!

His (mis)handling of Cummingsgate has made it patently obvious that there is one rule for us and another for the ‘privileged’ who tread the corridors of power.

Shame on him, Cummings and those senior members of the government who have, to all intents and purposes, stuck two fingers up to the rest of us, who have followed lockdown rules – with, in many cases, tragic consequences.

I am angry, appalled and disgusted. or even stop Brexit. This is mainly due to Cummings masterminding Brexit, which they cannot get over losing and also the General Election victory last December.

There have been four or five instances of MPs breaking lockdown rules. These have received only scant reporting and little criticism from the media, probably because it does not meet their agenda!

One wonders how many upstanding members of the media can honestly say they have not bent or broken any lockdown rules, not very many I expect, especially those of the baying mob that gathered outside Cummings house last weekend! Perhaps the best solution would be for Cummings to resign, take a couple of months off, and when this has died down he could be re-employed again? his common sense to deal with a potential difficult situation.

I think it is disgusting that he is being hounded by the media, who all want a scoop at whatever cost!

I imagine that anybody in an identical situation would act in exactly the same way.

I believe this to be a witch hunt as he is a very powerful, clever man and has managed to thwart the opposition on many occasions.

I am impressed by Boris Johnson sticking by him, loyalty being something that many of his accusers should take note of!

way forward, together with manual contact tracing. By his behaviour and disregard of his own messaging, Mr Cummings has set the poorest of examples and deserves to be sacked.
