BRISTOL Rovers have relieved manager Paul Tisdale of his duties, the club confirmed yesterday afternoon.

The 48-year-old replaced Ben Garner in November, but has been sacked after 19 games in charge.

Rovers are winless in 10 games and sit one place above the League One relegation zone following Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Oxford United at the Mem.

After the game, Tisdale bemoaned the lack of attacking options at his disposal but remained confident he could steer the Gas to safety.

Director of football Tommy Widdrington has been placed in temporary charge and will be supported by Kevin Maher and Jack Mesure.

Mel Gwinnett has also left the club. He was brought in to assist with “football operations”.

“Bristol Rovers can today confirm that it has parted company with manager Paul Tisdale,” a club spokesman said. “Tommy Widdrington will be taking charge of the first-team on a temporary basis, while the club undertakes the process of appointing a new manager. Tommy will be assisted by Jack Mesure and Kevin Maher.

“The club would like to thank both Paul and Mel for their efforts and wish them both the best of luck for the future.

“The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

After a tricky start, Tisdale managed league wins over AFC Wimbledon, Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool which helped to ease supporters’ fears of relegation.

But a shocking run of form has followed.

The Gas have just two points in their past eight league games and face a defining period in their season over the coming weeks, when they will face many of their immediate relegation rivals.
