Spencer focusing on his performances at Bath

-

whether the summer tour is going to go ahead. I just want to put my best foot forward here, play as well as I possibly can for Bath, and hopefully those things will follow.”

Spencer has revealed that one of the key areas he was told to develop by England boss Jones was his leadership skills, with the scrum-half chirpy on the field, but naturally more quiet off it, according to the man himself.

He said since arriving at Bath that he has taken on more of a leadership role with his game reaching ‘higher levels’ as a consequence.

Spencer added: “I’ve improved in that area quite a bit, I think.”

“I can get better in every aspect. One of my main work-ons was with leadership and just general nine (scrum-half ) specific stuff like the accuracy of my kicking game, the accuracy of general skills and being a leader in defence, like all good nines are.”

On a final scouting mission at the weekend, pictured, Gatland was in the stands at the Rec on Saturday night as Bath were beaten 19-10 by

Montpellier in the semi-finals of the European Challenge Cup.

To get into the Lions squad, Spencer will be up against Scotland’s Ali Price, Wales’ Tomos Williams and Ireland’s Jamison Gibson-Park and Conor Murray, along with Care.

England’s Ben Youngs has ruled himself out of touring, with his wife expecting their third child.

Elsewhere at Bath, number eight Taulupe Faletau and full-back Anthony Watson look certain to make the plane for South Africa.

The squad will be announced at 12.30pm tomorrow.
