Female welders aren’t so rare!

MUCH as welder Becky Fairway is to be admired for her choice of career, she is far from being the first or only female welder.

Arriving in Crediton in 1943 as a 22-year-old newly-wed, my late mother was soon at work as a welder to support the war effort.

She worked at the now long-disused mill building at the Cowley end of Exwick, Exeter.

Even in later life, she remembered how to don goggles and use a welding torch. She would have liked being seen as ‘a unicorn’.
