US is way ahead in Nato contribution
I AM sorry Tony Green found my last snippet about the EU to be snide. Don’t want that at all in our newspaper. I had vainly hoped it was ironic wit! Whilst Tony points out that NATO is well populated by EU states and therefore may have some responsibility for its own defence, I have to say that its biggest contributor by far is the USA and second biggest the UK. No other state gets near to spending the threshold 2% of GDP on defence and I would contend that most of those EU members, such as the Baltic states have joined to be defended by the USA/UK rather than assist in our defence. To which I attach no blame to them for being members, I am purely being numerical. Whilst Nord Stream 2 may be stalled, that is due to US sanctions, (again the EU had to be helped out of its institutional stupidity) originally not through German coyness which hopefully is growing, on the wane of the overrated Angela Merkel.
