Burst water pipe ruins donations for Ukraine

-

A BURST water pipe has flooded a Gloucester warehouse causing thousands of pounds of damage and spoiling supplies which are being gathered to send to Ukraine.

Warehouses in Chancel Close were affected and volunteers arrived on April 28 to find water across the floor of the unit which stores supplies destined for Ukrainian refugees.

One of the volunteers, Gloucester City Councillor Alastair Chambers (Ind, Robinswood & White City) said the situation was really sad.

He said: “We couldn’t understand where it had come from as there hasn’t been any rain. After asking the unit next door for a pallet to put some boxes on to keep the water off them, we found a big water main burst outside the day before. Sadly a lot of boxes for the orphanage and the children’s refugee centre have been ruined. We’ve been spending a lot of time getting it sorted and there’s probably been about £2,000 worth of damage to supplies and equipment here.”

Cllr Jaro Kubaszczyk (C, Kingsway) said the situation was very disappointing but they have a good team of volunteers and are determined to sort it out.

A Severn Trent spokesman said: “Our teams attended the burst on the day and worked hard to repair the pipe and clean up the immediate area. Following the works and subsequent repair, there was a leak on the internal pipework within the warehouse unit which resulted in a mains water leak. Our teams have visited the site again to assess the situation and are in communication with those impacted to see how we can support them further.”
