Burchnall looking for ‘hungry’ players as FGR go bottom

FOREST GREEN ROVERS .. 0 WYCOMBE WANDERERS .. 2

IAN Burchnall has warned his Forest Green Rovers players that they must show they are up for the fight against relegation every day in training after slipping to the foot of the Sky Bet League One table with a home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chairboys had not won in three games, but David Wheeler opened the scoring in the 14th minute from just inside the box after the hosts could not clear.

Joe Jacobson’s corner dropped in a central position and midfielder

Wheeler pounced to fire in his third goal of the season.

Winger Garath McCleary then stunned Rovers with a classy second after 27 minutes. He shaped to cross the ball from the right angle of the area, but then curled his third of the campaign into the far corner with the outside of his boot.

Both teams had come close to scoring before Wheeler’s opener. Rovers striker Connor Wickham’s angled shot looped off Josh Scowen and over the crossbar, while Scowen then saw his own shot defect inches over the woodwork.

But woeful Forest Green have now only picked up two points in six games as pressure mounts on boss Burchnall. He said: “I’m going to watch training Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and the only thing I am looking for is those players that look like they’re willing to fight, willing to go that extra bit. I’ll pick a team based on that, based on players that look so hungry to wear the shirt. That’s all we can do.”
