City man Semenyo is picked by Ghana

BRISTOL City forward Antoine Semenyo has been named in Ghana’s 26-man squad for the World Cup – but former Ashton Gate goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott has missed out on a place at Qatar 2022 due to injury.

Semenyo was confirmed by head coach Otto Addo yesterday morning, with the Black Stars among the last nations to confirm their travelling party for the tournament, which kicks off this Sunday in the Middle East.

Robins academy product Semenyo, below, earned his first

Ghana cap in June after declaring for the African nation having also been eligible to represent England, his country of birth.

Ghana are in Group H, arguably the toughest of the tournament, alongside Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea, with their first match against the former a week on Thursday.

Semenyo is the only City player who will be at the World Cup, but former Robins Famara Diedhiou (Senegal), Joe Morrell (Wales) and Bailey Wright (Australia) have made it to Qatar as well.

However, Wollacott, who plays for League One Charlton, having been at Swindon last term, has been left out by Addo due to a finger injury sustained in the warm-up before last Saturday’s game against Burton, in a heartbreaking blow for the Bristolian. He had been set to be Ghana’s first choice goalkeeper.
