Returning Romans thinking of Fletcher
BATH City will return to action this weekend 11 days after one of their players sustained a serious head injury during a match.
Forward Alex Fletcher was rushed to hospital after colliding with the pitchside barriers during the Romans’ National League South clash with Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday, November 8.
The incident, which happened just five minutes in, led to the abandonment of the game.
After being taken by ambulance to a hospital, Fletcher underwent emergency neurosurgery in order to stabilise his condition and has been in intensive care ever since.
In an update provided by the club yesterday, City said Fletcher was showing “small signs of improvement” but remains in a critical condition. However, it has now been that the club will return to action tomorrow after a couple of recent games were postponed following the incident.
A statement from the club said: “With Alex Fletcher continuing to receive hospital treatment and his family reporting on Sunday that he is in a critical condition in intensive care but starting to show small signs of improvement, the players have been given a return to training programme.
“Bath City can confirm that men’s first-team fixtures will resume this Saturday with our away visit to Billericay in the FA Trophy. Alex’s family are aware of this and support the decision.”
Romans boss Jerry Gill, above, added: “Alex is uppermost in our minds. We are a club united in our support for Alex, Ellie his fiance, and his family.”
