Series win for Australia

-

AUSTRALIA moved into an unassailable 2-0 lead in their ODI series against England as a rescue act from James Vince and Sam Billings proved insufficient in Sydney.

Chasing 281, England were stunned by Mitchell Starc snaring Jason Roy and Dawid Malan in the opening over while they stumbled to 34 for three before Vince and Billings put on 122 to steady the ship. But Vince’s downfall for 60 off 72 balls opened the floodgates, with Billings departing for 71 off 80 deliveries soon after, as England were all out for 208 in 39.5 overs to lose by 72 runs. A dead rubber awaits in Melbourne tomorrow, an ill-fitting conclusion to what has been a memorable past few weeks for England, who last Sunday won the T20 World Cup.

■ Jon Lewis is the new head coach of England’s women’s team, taking over in time to lead the side’s tour of the West Indies next month.

Lewis has previously worked as head coach of the men’s under-19 squad and fast-bowling coach of the men’s senior side under Chris Silverwood.

Now aged 47, he played for Gloucestershire, Sussex and Surrey and was a three-format international over the course of 15 appearances for England.
