Chelsea top the table as Arsenal drop points at the Emirates

-

ARSENAL dropped their first points of the Women’s Super League season as Manchester United came from behind to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

The clash was one of three fixtures moved to Premier League grounds this weekend and more than 40,000 fans witnessed one of United’s biggest wins and the end of Arsenal’s 14-match winning run in the WSL.

Ella Toone put United ahead late in a first half as the visitors dominated, but Arsenal were level seconds after half-time through Frida Maanum. Laura Wienroither looked like she might have won it for Arsenal in the 73rd minute, but Millie Turner equalised in the 85th minute and Alessia Russo scored the winner in injury time.

Manchester City made it five Women’s Super League wins in a row with a 2-1 victory against Everton at

Walton Hall Park. Julie Blakstad put the visitors in front, but they were then punished for some poor defending when Rikke Sevecke equalised for Everton just before the break. Khadija Shaw netted the winner in the second half as City stayed fourth in the WSL.

Yesterday, Emma Hayes returned to the dugout for Chelsea’s 3-0 Women’s Super League victory over Tottenham. Hayes had been missing since early October as she recovered from surgery. She oversaw a comfortable win thanks to goals from Sam Kerr, Erin Cuthbert and Guro Reiten. The match was played in front of 38,300 fans at Stamford Bridge - a record home crowd for Chelsea women. The victory puts Chelsea three points clear at the top of the WSL.

A hat-trick from Rachel Daly saw Aston Villa come from behind to beat Reading 3-1. Lauren Wade gave Reading an early lead but Daly scored two headed goals to put Villa ahead before the break. Daly sealed her excellent performance from the penalty spot.

Rachel Furness headed a 92ndminute equaliser as Liverpool ended their six-match losing run in a 3-3 draw at Brighton while West Ham enjoyed a 1-0 home victory over Leicester City.
