Getting messages across in fine style

-

WHEN it comes to using fossil fuels and polluting the atmosphere, it does make one wonder how much was used and produced transporting hundreds of delegates to the Cop27 conference that as usual will have little effect. Perhaps ‘Cop, Cop, the talking shop, we promise much but won’t do a lot’ should be its motto!

Turning to the letters page (November 25), Edward Kynaston sums up the current strikes perfectly when he states that they are “politically motivated”. The unions have always been opposed to a Tory government and have often tried to control a Labour one.

Of course, one has a great deal of sympathy for the low paid, but demanding an at or above inflation pay rise is not going to help the country recover and it is doubtful if anyone would accept a pay reduction if or when inflation and the cost-of-living falls. It seems to work one way only!

As for the letters from Gwen Hewlett (Leave our historic city names alone) and Ann Conway (When will the current migrant crisis be sorted?), both make excellent points.

The current craze for defacing statues or changing street names because of a few ‘woke’ protesters frightens city councils into pursuing what they assume to be a politically correct action to destroy history in case someone, somewhere, might be offended, should be challenged by the public who live in the area.

In her letter regarding the tackling of the migration crisis, I think that Ann Conway speaks for the majority of the country. Unless it is severely curtailed, the cost of providing accommodation, health checks and other benefits – already at around six million a day – is going to be play a significant part in the next election, particularly when we have our own people living on the streets and using food banks.

The only way to stop boat crossings to this country is to make it clear that by entering the country illegally they are likely to be deported back to their country of origin (because the French don’t want them and won’t have them back) as soon as they arrive. Then and only then will they get the message that the UK means business.
