Regulation­s hinder best-laid plans

WE divided our home into three in compliance with all the regulation­s and set about making the two spare sections into homes to let. Seeing all the publicity for grants, we applied for grants for a new central heating boiler and for roof and wall insulation for the two sections.

We were informed that no grants were available, as we were not personally living in the two units, but that the new tenants can apply when living there. However, it is not legal to let a house unless it has a heating and hot-water system and is properly insulated, so no one can live there without the boiler and insulation.
