Notaro Care Homes provides care and support for people living with Alcohol-related Brain Damage (ARBD) through Notaro ARBD Care.

They operate three specialist

ARBD care homes, two located in Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset, and one in Torquay, Devon. They are among the few care home providers in the UK registered to assist individuals afflicted by Alcohol-related Brain Damage, including Korsakoff’s syndrome and Wernicke’s encephalopathy (commonly referred to as ‘Wernicke-Korsakoff’s Syndrome’).

When an individual becomes a resident in one of their specialist ARBD homes, the team provides them with a tailored support plan. This plan aims to empower residents, helping them build confidence and skills to reintegrate into the local community and live as independently as possible.

They conduct thorough quarterly assessments of each individual, along with ongoing assessments and reviews. Recovery is measured in terms of improved cognitive functioning, physical ability, and quality of life. Several residents have progressed to live independently, establish careers, and successfully reintegrate into their communities.

Jay was previously a resident of

Serenita ARBD Care Home in Weston-super-Mare. He is now working in Serenita as a second chef and said:

“When I was a resident at Serenita, I couldn’t have wished for a better team here. I’m not just saying that now because I work here! They were so supportive. And they went a bit beyond to be honest, and they do with everyone.

“I wouldn’t be alive. They helped me enormously as a recovering alcoholic.

“They offer life skills to get back into working life. So when you do leave, you have the skills to live on your own. It just gives you that confidence.“

Milan Mores has been the Manager at Serenita ARBD Care Home for a number of years. He states, “ARBD is still a very unknown subject. People still don’t know that they can actually get brain damage from excessive drinking. “What we do at Serenita is help people to get better. It is very important to say, we are not rehab, but we have a three-step enablement programme.

It’s a practical life skills programme.

“When people come to us, we assess the level of damage and how they are improving over time. This is the difference between dementia and ARBD. People diagnosed with ARBD, they can actually get better.

“Jay is an excellent example of how the programme has helped someone recover and live an independent life.”
