National award for dedicated radiographer
AN EXPERIENCED radiographer has won a prestigious national award for her unstinting dedication to patients.
Kim Brown, who works at the Velindre Cancer Centre, was named Wales Radiographer of the Year at a ceremony at the House of Commons last month.
Velindre provides services to more than 1.5 million people across South East Wales and beyond.
Each year the staff care for more than 5,000 new referrals and around 50,000 new outpatients.
When voting for Kim, her colleagues described her professionalism under ever-increasing pressures, and her “unwavering care, support and development of the whole radiography staff group”.
She was also praised for her “reassuring nature, reliability, and her ability to listen and provide guidance and a considered opinion is trusted and appreciated by the staff”.
Kim said: “When I realised I had been nominated for Radiographer of the Year I felt extremely flattered that my colleagues thought I deserved this award.
“After all, I’m just doing my job that I enjoy very much and get a lot of satisfaction from. When the letter arrived telling me I had actually won the title I was very surprised, but absolutely delighted, not only for myself, but for all my colleagues present and past who have helped.”
One of Kim’s colleagues, Helen Payne, added: “In the 20 years that I have known Kim my respect for her continues to grow; she never fails to surprise me with her ability to adapt to situations and the way that she nurtures and supports staff, students and patients alike, standing up for what they believe in and sharing their own experiences with others, be they positive or difficult. I can honestly say that Kim is a person I would always want on my team.”
Kim added: “My priority has always been patient care. My continuing goal is to help drive radiotherapy departmental changes to advance excellence in patient care. I firmly believe our patients should always be at the centre of what we do.”
