Horgan loses his job after defeat at Newport

NEWPORT........................44 NEATH ................................0

NEWPORT team manager Mark Workman was delighted after seeing his side hammer Neath to go second in the Principality Premiership table.

It was a defeat for the Welsh All Blacks that cost head coach Patrick Horgan his job as Neath announced yesterday that the former scrum-half was leaving the club.

The Black and Ambers wrapped up the match in the first quarter with a try from prop John Lavender, a penalty try and another sharp touchdown from hooker Evan Whitson.

Centre Paul King ensured the bonus point for Newport with a 55th-minute touchdown, while replacement hooker Henry Palmer and outside-half Julian Mogg added late tries. Mogg also kicked three conversions.

“Make no mistake about it, to pound a side like Neath 44-0 at any time is a great achievement – regardless of their current position in the league,” said Workman. “Our boys are going from strength to strength and we are now looking forward to playing Cross Keys at Pandy Park on Boxing Day. That should be a cracking game.”

Neath played with plenty of spirit, but they did not have the power or guile to trouble Newport who had an outstanding flanker in Rhodri Jones and a lightning quick wing in Elliot Frewen. Powerhouse pair Dan Partridge and skipper Adam Brown also got through a lot of hard work in the tight and loose play. Newport: L ap Myrddin (E Howley 68); W.
