Buckley upset Llandudno in shoot-out

-

BUCKLEY TOWN caused the biggest upset in the third round of the Welsh Cup as they sent Llandudno crashing out following a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

It was goalless at the end of 120 minutes and Buckley keeper Ben Jones sparked the celebrations when he saved a spot-kick from Marc Williams to confirm the visitors’ place in the last 16.

Llandudno manager Alan Morgan was gracious in defeat.

“We have no excuses, they were better than us on penalties,” he said.

“It’s disappointing to go out of the Welsh Cup as we would have liked a little run but we move on to next week,” he added.

Huws Gray Alliance leaders Cefn Druids also sprung a surprise as they beat Rhyl 1-0 at The Rock thanks to Ryan Kershaw’s extratime strike.

But holders The New Saints had a stroll in the park as they brushed aside Aberystwyth Town 3-0 with Chris Marriott, Scott Quigley and Matty Williams on target.

Chillingly, Saints boss Craig Harrison said afterwards: “It’s our cup at the moment and we’ll be doing everything we can to keep hold of it.”

In the all-Welsh Premier ties a brace from Mike Hayes led Bala Town to a 3-1 win at Carmarthen. Lee Hunt added another for the Lakesiders with Kieran Lewis replying while goals from Ryan Wignall and Chris Budrys saw Airbus UK 2-0 winners at Haverfordwest County.

Newtown prevailed 2-0 at Flint Town United, thanks to goals from Craig Harris and Matty Owen and two Callum Morris penalties and a Nick Rushton finish gave Gap Con- nah’s Quay a 3-0 win at Prestatyn Town.

Barry Town United’s James Dixon hit five as the Welsh League side thumped Denbigh Town 6-1 while Afan Lido, Caerau (Ely), Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cwmbran Celtic also made it into the last 16.

WELSH LEAGUE Division One leaders Goytre and Cardiff Metropolitan University were not in league action on Saturday, giving the chasing pack the chance to close the gap.

But Goytre United missed out as they were held 2-2 at Monmouth Town, Jordan Davies and Tim Hicks on target for the Port Talbotbased visitors, with Nick Harrhy and Ricky Greaves replying for the hosts.

Penybont were too strong for visitors Aberbargoed Buds as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, with goals coming from Cullen Kinsella, Ricky Hodge and an own goal.
