Spot of streaming Trouble for star Swift and Lostprophets
TAYLOR SWIFT is back on Spotify but her music has been attributed to Lostprophets.
Swift, who was one of Spotify’s most popular artists, had previously made the decision to remove her entire back catalogue from the music streaming site.
The singer’s relationship with the service has apparently always been rocky – she initially refused to release her 2012 album Red on Spotify, criticising the fact that artists receive between just $0.006 and $0.0084 per song play.
But as of yesterday morning Swift’s song I Knew You Were Trouble had been live on the site for three days with 39,681,189 plays according to the company’s play count.
But it appears with a screenshot of Canadian cartoon Scaredy Squirrel with the Lostprophets logo superimposed. According to The Guardian it sat at the top of Lostprophets’ charts, with no obvious acknowledgement of Swift anywhere on the site.
Pontypridd band Lostprophets disbanded after singer Ian Watkins was exposed as a sex offender and jailed for 29 years.
A judge told him he had “plumbed new depths of depravity” before jail- ing him. I Knew You Were Trouble has also reappeared on Taylor Swift’s own Spotify page, previously only home to her contributions to film soundtracks and other compilations since she pulled her own music from the streaming service in protest at its non-negotiable presence in the free tier of Spotify’s subscriptions.
Spotify is one of the fastest-growing sources of music consumption in the world. It boasts more than 10m paying subscribers across 58 countries on top of the 30m who access the streaming service for free.
It appears that the song has since been removed from Spotify and can no longer be searched on the streaming service.
A Spotify spokeswoman said: “The track was taken down as soon as it was discovered – in this case three days after it was delivered – and we will be taking the matter further with the provider who delivered this track.”
