Large-scale projects need forethought
THE impending closure of the Severn Railway Tunnel during September and October promotes questions that require answers.
Firstly, there is a possible design flaw in the construction of the two Severn Crossing bridges in that they cannot carry trains in both directions. The Severn Tunnel is an old brick construction requiring constant internal repairs. Secondly, the alternative route through Gloucester will add some 50 minutes to commuter travel time from Cardiff to London-Paddington. This is a considerable inconvenience.
Large-scale capital projects should consider possible consequences as well as benefits in relation to time. R Wolstencroft
