Peter’s Pies adds a new family line
PETER’S is one of the biggest food production employers in Wales, putting more than £20m into the local economy in terms of payroll.
The Bedwas-based master of pies has become a household name, not only in Wales, but across the UK since it was established in Merthyr Tydfil in the 1950s.
Starting life as a small pie manufacturer known as Thomas Pies, the brainchild of Stanley Thomas provided highly sought-after sausage rolls, pies and pasties for the Valleys. The company grew and grew, and in 1976 it relocated to its current home – a purpose-built factory in Bedwas, Caerphilly.
Today, under new ownership, Peter’s makes more than four million delicious pastries every week, delivering them nationwide via their extensive network of distribution centres to a variety of customers including fast-food outlets, fish bars, restaurants, cafes, sandwich shops, independent retailers, schools, hospitals, hotels and stadiums.
Altogether the pasty giant employs 850 members of staff and manufactures and distributes more than 900 different types of brand and own-label savoury pastries to the retail and food service industries.
Towards the end of last year Peter’s Pies made two key investments in the form of a new pastry laminator and the addition of a new pie line to produce family-size cutting pies. Peter’s Family Pies, available in corned beef and minced beef and onion flavour, were launched across Tesco stores in Wales and under their Seriously Tasty brand UK wide in Asda.
Peter’s also recently acquired national gourmet hot dog business Mom’s Fabulous Foods, as well as securing a contract to supply Morrisons with seven Peter’s products distributed UK wide in the supermarket’s Deli Express, including the traditional pasty, a pork and pickle roll, chicken pasty and cheese and onion pasty.
