A very special treat for fans of folk
Gigspanner, Millennium Hall, Laugharne
BBC folk award winners Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin will join forces with violinist Peter Knight, winner of two Best Musician Awards in 2016, and his trio Gigspanner, at the Millennium Hall in Laugharne on Sunday, May 1.
It will be a short series of extraordinary concerts by five superb musicians. They include Peter Knight’s Gigspanner who will hot foot it from the BBC Radio 3 Sounds of Shakespeare concerts.
Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin will join them – they have already built massive reputations for their imaginative and ground-breaking arrangements of both traditional and self-penned material, but put all five brilliant musicians together on the same stage at the same time – and you have an incredibly special treat in store from the Gigspanner Big Band.
Both Gigspanner and Phillip and Hannah released highly-acclaimed albums in 2015 – Layers of Ages and Watershed respectively – both of which have featured heavily in the Best of 2015 listings released by radio stations and the music press.
When the opportunity eventually arose, and Hannah and Phillip joined Gigspanner as special guests for two dates of the Layers of Ages album launch tour, and the chemistry was undeniable.
The following morning, the organiser of Bristol Folk Festival called to offer Gigspanner’s extended line-up the Saturday Headline slot at the 2016 Festival. Whilst there had been no immediate plans made to repeat the experience, it was agreed between everyone that the connection couldn’t end there, and so the offer was accepted and a short tour put together around it.
The lineup features Peter Knight (fiddle/vocals) Roger Flack (guitar/ vocals) Vincent Salzfaas (percussion/ vocals) Phillip Henry (slide guitar/ harmonica/vocals) Hannah Martin (fiddle/banjo/vocals). They play at Millennium Memorial Hall, Laugharne on Sunday, May 1.
