Time to wed, after 35 years together

-

AN elderly couple have got married in a cancer hospice after being together for nearly four decades.

Glyn and Maureen Davies finally decided to wed in the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth, where Glyn was receiving treatment for his prostate cancer, before his condition got any worse.

The pair tied the knot in front of their family and friends after living together for 35 years.

Glyn, from Penarth, said: “We’re getting married a bit late in life – it should be a new start for us.”

He has been living with prostate cancer since 2012 and was staying at the hospice for symptom control when he was told he could get married there.

Within hours the couple had set a date and family and friends gathered for a ceremony on November 17 – complete with two wedding cakes and a buffet.

Marie Curie nurse Debra Smallbone said: “They wanted to get married before he goes home and before his condition deteriorates.”

Maureen, née Geasley, said she met Glyn 36 years ago in a Cardiff club after a friend convinced her to go on a night out.

“He was such a nice guy,” the 75-year-old said.

The couple soon moved in together but didn’t exchange vows as Maureen had just been through a divorce.

But, years later, they were finally ready to tie the knot.

Maureen said of her new husband: “He’s marvellous.

“He’s so honest, gentle, and very thoughtful. There’s nothing bad I could say about him.

Glyn, 72, was first diagnosed with cancer when he went to hospital after feeling a “niggling pain” in the bottom of his back.

He has since been on a variety of treatments. He said that the cancer’s progression was initially slow but it became more painful as it advanced.

The hospice provides 24-hour care and support for those living with a terminal illness.
