Man with ‘vendetta’ against his ex jailed for breaching order

- Jason Evans newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

AMAN with a “vendetta of hatred and jealousy” against his ex has been jailed after repeatedly breaking a restraining order – even breaking into her house and stealing her underwear.

Swansea Crown Court heard how Kyler Brophy broke the order six times – the latest when his ex-partner had arranged to go on a date on December 18 last year.

A man picked her up from her mother’s house in Portmead, Swansea, – but Brophy, 21, appeared in the street carrying a hammer.

Brian Simpson, prosecuting, said the couple drove slowly past Brophy who kicked the car, fell over, and them threw the hammer at the vehicle, but missed.

The court heard the couple drove to an address in Gwynedd Avenue in Townhill to pick-up a friend, only for Brophy and his father to appear outside the house.

The court heard Brophy began shouting at his former partner and repeatedly kicked the passenger door of the car, causing the vehicle to “rock”, and his former partner to “flinch” with each blow.

The couple drove away – followed by Brophy and his father – and went to Swansea Central police station to report the incident.

In a victim impact statement the woman said Brophy had done some “crazy things” in the past, and she only felt safe when he was in prison.

Brophy, of Glenside Road, Portmead, pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order and to criminal damage when he appeared in the dock.

The court heard the December incident was the sixth time Brophy had breached restraining orders against the same woman. Three of the breaches involved breaking into the woman’s house; on one occasion he broke in and stole her underwear, and on another he cut up her clothes. He also breached the order by making 80 phone calls to her while he was in prison.

He has also punched doors and smashed windows, and in February last year was convicted of actual bodily harm after punching one of his former partner’s friends as he tried to visit her.

Stuart John, for Brophy, said his client “seems to have an obsession” with his ex, but that he now understands that he has to put his previous relationship with her behind him.

Judge Peter Heywood warned Brophy that if he continued to breach the restraining order he would be sent to prison for ever-longer sentences.

Brophy was sentenced to two years in prison for breaching the restraining order, and two months for criminal damage, both sentences to run concurrently making a total of two years. He will serve half that time in custody.
