Officer sacked as he starts prison sentence for rape

-

A POLICE officer has been jailed for five years after raping a woman while his wife slept in an adjoining room.

Iain James Clarke, 48, raped the woman in December 2015 and was sentenced at Mold Crown Court on Thursday. He has now been sacked by North Wales Police following a special misconduct hearing.

Clarke, of St Peter’s Park, Northop, was described by Judge Rhys Rowlands as “callous”. He told Clarke: “You showed a callous indifference to her feelings and an overblown sense of your own importance and raped her.”

North Wales Police said a special case police misconduct hearing was held in private.

A spokesman said: “The officer did not contest the allegation that he had breached a Standard of Professional Behaviour relating to discreditable conduct (gross misconduct) and the temporary Chief Constable determined that the officer should be dismissed from North Wales Police immediately and without notice.”

Detective Superintendent Jo Williams, of North Wales Police’s Protection of Vulnerable People unit, said: “My thoughts are with the survivor of this heinous crime and I would like to commend her for the courage and dignity she has shown throughout these proceedings.

“I hope that this outcome gives the people of North Wales confidence in the fact that North Wales Police and its criminal justice partners are committed to bringing those people who perpetrate crimes of this nature to justice – no matter who they are.”
