Gareth is backing Wales to hit heights in Paris
GARETH EDWARDS is backing Wales to create more golden memories in Paris this afternoon... fully 50 years on from the greatest moment of his own career.
Alun Wyn Jones takes his team into battle in France half a century after Edwards embarked upon his own Wales career, going on to establish himself as the finest rugby player in the history of the game.
Edwards was part of the legendary Welsh Class of the 1970s and triumphed on Lions’ tours to New Zealand and South Africa, yet still ranks that Wales debut against the French in 1967 as his best memory.
In a fascinating interview inside the Western Mail today, the scrumhalf legend gives an insight into how differently Wales prepared for matches back in the day. But he stresses one thing has remained constant throughout the intervening five decades... the passion from a Welsh nation to see their rugby team win.
“And fingers crossed it’s going to happen today again, with Wales taking the momentum they built up with the victory over Ireland into the game with the French,” said Edwards.
“Pulling on that Welsh jersey is so magical. In Wales, expectations for our rugby team are so high that while we celebrate the wins, if performances aren’t delivered we get disappointed.
“That’s the passion for the sport. It’s been like that through the ages.
“But we beat Ireland last time out, let’s build on that. It’s Lions year, and while you never need an extra incentive when you play for Wales, this is a chance for players to push their claims to take on New Zealand.
“Many of these Welsh players put their hands back up for Lions selection in victory over Ireland. Let’s hope they keep their hands up by overcoming the French too.”
