Iconic wartime aircraft to grace Swansea skies

-

THREE iconic aircraft which played a crucial role in helping the Allies win World War II will feature at the Wales National Air Show this summer.

Taking place on the weekend of Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2, the event will welcome the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to the free event.

An Avro Lancaster, a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane will all be on show, with the group previously taken part in major British events, such as the Queen’s 80th birthday celebrations in 2006 and Prince William’s wedding in 2011. The aircraft will join the RAF’s Red Arrows and Typhoon display teams for the event, which is run by Swansea council and sponsored by Swansea University.

Swansea council’s strategic manager for culture, tourism, marketing and events Frances Jenkins said: “There’s a huge element of nostalgia involved with these type of events, so we’re delighted that we’re now able to confirm the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s participation in this July’s Wales Air Show.

“Combining with modern aircraft, cutting-edge aerobatic displays and ground-based entertainment, this display is among many that hundreds of thousands of spectators will soon be enjoying in the skies above Swansea. More aircraft will be confirmed over the coming weeks as we continue to develop the programme for this major event that’s worth more than £1m to the city’s economy.”

More than 200,000 people are expected to watch the action unfold over the weekend.
